(UPDATE: JOYous Visual Tricks Art Gallery at SM North Edsa is already closed)
A few months ago, the family decided to have lunch at SM North EDSA before our monthly grocery-shopping. A few hours before we left our house, I saw one of my friends on Facebook upload photos of their visit at some 3D art gallery. The silly little jealous kid inside me rose from its slumber, and soon I was asking my friend where we can find the place. Guess what! The place is called JOYous Visual Tricks Art Gallery and it happens to be located just outside SM The Block – exactly where we’re headed!
The taxi dropped us off right in front of the JOYous Visual Tricks Art Gallery, but we came to an agreement that we should have lunch first because we’re sure we’ll need the energy!
We came back a few hours later full of energy, and ready to pose and smile for the camera to our hearts’ desires. 😀
Shoes and slippers are not allowed inside the gallery, so you need to deposit yours at the information counter first. Don’t worry; they have eco bags and shelves where they’ll store your footwear for safe keeping.
You will be assigned to one tour guide, who will explain to you how everything works. He is trained on how to use all kinds of cameras, even DSLRS, so you wouldn’t have to leave one of your friends out as the cameraman when taking group shots.
He was even game enough to demonstrate all the poses that we can do at each 3D panel, so we’d sometimes just stare at him when he’s doing a pose and go, “Nope! That’s not gonna happen!” 😀
He’ll also point to this little red marker on the floor. This is where your group’s designated cameraman or your tour guide must stand to get the best angle in taking photos of the 3D panels.
Just like in this photo. I stood on the red marker, asked my mom to strike a pose, clicked on the shutter, and – voila! – I have shot where it looks like my mom’s handing a bunch of flowers to an elephant and a giraffe! (*Mindblown*)
There are 28 3D panels and 18 visual tricks, quizzes, and trivia scattered around the gallery. The small visual tricks or illusions like the ones on the photo above will make you really doubt if your sense of sight is working properly. Caution: Some eye rubbing and scratching of your head may ensue.
Among all the 18 visual illusions, this is by far my favorite. If you want to find out why, you must see it for yourself! No spoiler alert here.:D But I’ll warn you; be careful when you’re approaching this when you’re taking a closer look, or you might get yourself hurt. (Stupid me! :D)
The highlights of the tour are the 23 mind-boggling 3D panels. The only things you need to work on are staying in character, maintaining a pose, and getting a good shot. It’s actually a good workout!
We had to stop our mom from dropping our tour guide to his death because no one’s going to take our pictures and teach us how to pose. 😛
I’m thanking my sister and my mom for ruining my childhood. This is not how I pictured fairies when I was young.
But then I thought, how can fairies be slim when their diet is mainly of sweet nectar and honey, right?
Here’s my family trying to protect themselves from a dragon’s vicious attack!
I’m seriously traumatized after seeing my sister being all too comfortable with some circus monkeys.
It took me several tries before I was finally able to get a decent shot from these two, since my mom keeps moving like she’s surfing on clouds. I had to constantly remind her that I’m taking a photo and not a video!
Pardon my mom’s poor acting skills. I’m pretty sure that’s not the face you’re going to make when a hippopotamus is trying to eat you.
This is my mom third-wheeling on Aladdin and Princess Jasmine’s carpet ride.
Somebody call the police! I caught these two illegal poachers trying to bring these poor birds into captivity!
Good call on setting those birds free. Now you can climb the stairway to heaven!
This is our favorite 3D panel, and it’s an awesome trick on perspective!
Meet the modern day David and Goliath, though I’m not sure what that creepy clown on the floor is doing!
Now I wonder where I got my awesome acting skills. Clearly, it’s not from my mom.
Please come see the epic movie “Grabeh Teh,” starring Sandra Bulok!
This is how you ride a tortoise like a boss!
My mom looks like she bit into a slice of lemon. (Ang asim!)
Our Nanay will never surrender without putting up a fight! Consider yourselves dead, pirates!
This is either a cut scene from a samurai movie or a pig slaughter house. I bet it’s the latter. 😀
Meet my Nanay, the Bella Swan of the Philippines, trying to escape from the werewolf Jacob. (It’s a Twilight reference, in case you didn’t get it.:D)
Here’s my sister and my mom trying to slay one of Daenaery Targaryen’s dragon. Good luck!
Genie: Thank you for releasing me from my eternal prison. Now I will grant you one wish. What would it be?
Mom: Can you raise my friend from the dead?
Genie: Sorry, but I can’t do that!
Ate: Can you make us sexy?
Genie: Take me to the dead body!
At the end of the tour, we were all relieved when our tour guised ushered us to this station where some alcohol, hand sanitizer, and tissues are provided to get ourselves cleaned out. There were also feedback forms you can fill up to rate your experience at JOYous Visual Tricks Art Gallery.
If your family and friends love to take pictures and want to experience a different kind of fun, then JOYous Visual Tricks Art Gallery is the perfect destination for you! It’s really cheap and it is sure to deliver an hour of amazement and laughter… and you might work out a sweat, too! 😀
